Bike/Skating/Scooter Safety Clinic

Bellin Health will join in sponsoring Touchpoint Health Plan's seventh annual On The Road Again Bicycle/In-Line Skating/Scooter Safety Clinics at Bellin Hospital and at the Ashwaubenon Department of Public Safety. The clinics will be held simultaneously at both locations. Registration is NOT required. This is the largest free safety and helmet program in Northeast Wisconsin.

Children must be accompanied by a parent and bring their own bicycle, skates or scooters. Skaters should bring protective gear such as wrist guards and knee pads.

The clinics are designed for children in kindergarten through 4th grade. The clinics will offer safety inspections of each child's bike or scooter, instruction in how to properly fit a helmet, and a variety of skills training stations including:

* Ride Right outlining the rules of the road

* Headin' Out to learn to merge

* The Mine Field to practice control and balance

* Lookin' Back for traffic

* Headsmart Headstart to teach the importance of helmets

Each year nearly 600,000 people are treated for injuries suffered in bicycle accidents, and 80,000 people are seriously injured while skating. More than 900 people are killed in those accidents, with the highest death rates among those 16 years of age and under. One third of all bicycle injuries and almost two-thirds of bicycle deaths are caused by head injuries. Scooter injuries are becoming more and more common, with thousands of broken limbs, head injuries and even some deaths each year.

As part of our commitment to improve the health of our children, and to emphasize the importance of safety, Bellin Health and Touchpoint Health Plan will provide a free helmet to each child completing the clinic. These helmets are valued at more than $30 each.

This is the first year this program has been offered by Touchpoint with Bellin Health in Green Bay. Previously Touchpoint has offered the program in partnership with ThedaCare in the Fox Cities.

Since 1995, we've helped distribute nearly 20,000 free helmets to children in the Fox Cities, said Touchpoint Health Plan President Jay Fulkerson. This year we feel it is important to partner with Bellin Health to make certain Green Bay area children can also receive these helmets and the safety training, added Fulkerson. In the future, it is anticipated that this annual program will alternate yearly between Green Bay and the Fox Cities.

We are committed to projects that promote health and safety of children in the Green Bay area, George Kerwin, Bellin Health President and CEO, said. We are pleased to work with Touchpoint Health Plan to bring this well-known program to our area. By providing the safety clinic and thousands of free helmets, we are making a difference in our community to ensure the safety of children, Kerwin stated.

A special, full-color helmet safety poster featuring Fang, the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers' mascot, is being distributed to more than 15,000 children through area schools over the next two weeks. The poster also contains a coupon for a free child's admission to a Timber Rattlers' game with the purchase of an adult ticket.

For over 90 years, Bellin Health has served the health needs of people in Northeast Wisconsin and Upper Michigan and has a comprehensive pediatric program dedicated to the health of children and their families. Bellin Health has continuously achieved accreditation from the Joint Commission on Accreditation for Healthcare.

Touchpoint Health Plan is the only health plan in Northeast Wisconsin to achieve Excellent Accreditation from the National Committee for Quality Assurance, rating it among the top 10% of health plans nation wide. There are more than 145,000 members of Touchpoint's managed care plans, and more than 170,000 people enrolled in Touchpoint's PPO plans, including more than 90,000 people in the Green Bay area.
